Cassandra's Summer Learning Journey: Week 3, Day 5, Activity 3 - Let it RAIN

  1. Hi Cassandra,

It's Leslie here, reading your blog from my home in Canada as a member of the Summer Learning Journey team. I'm very glad that you've chosen to participate in the program this summer - good for you!

I see that you've written a story about an acid rain storm. Your mystery ending, asking where the water went, is a very creative. Good for you to create a mystery in this way!

The activity, however, asks you to tell a story about acid rain - rain that is made up of water and toxic chemicals which usually are very hard on the plants and animals in our environments. Acid rain, rather than helping things to grow, usually causes plants and animals to die. So a story with this theme typically is quite a sad story.

Here in Canada we started to notice that the fish in some of our lakes and rivers were dying, in the 1980's. Then we noticed that our trees were becoming damaged and we realized that this was because the chemistry of our rain was changing. Toxic chemicals released into the air by industries and by cars were polluting the air and, therefore, the clouds. New laws were made requiring companies to stop releasing pollution into our lakes and rivers and to clean up the smoke coming from their chimney stacks. Over time, things have improved a great deal, fortunately!! Many of the lakes and rivers that were 'dying' have improved so that they have fish and plant life in them once again. Hurray!

Acid rain is scary!! We have to do our best to learn how to make the things that we need without pumping toxic waste into the air, don't we?

This isn't a very happy topic but I hope you're having a happy summer time, enjoying lots of fun in the sun as well as these Summer Learning Journey activities.

    Cheers,

    Leslie
